Ald. Lamont Westmoreland
Press Release

A time for better communication along with less finger pointing and inefficiency

Statement of Alderman Lamont Westmoreland June 28, 2024

By - Jun 28th, 2024 03:43 pm

I want to express my concern and disappointment regarding the current operation of the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM). As I always emphasize, there is room for improvement in every situation in life, and this situation exemplifies that. Considering HACM’s crucial role and mission, there is simply no room for inefficient operations.

Upon closer examination, I have discovered that the HACM Board has had three vacant seats for extended periods: 14 months, 9 months, and 17 months, respectively. I believe these vacancies may be directly tied to the issues facing HACM, among other things. It was only on Friday (June 21) that I learned of the names that are being presented as Mayoral nominees for these positions. Given that Council members confirm these nominees, it would make the most sense for us to be more involved in the process or, at the very least, be briefed throughout their recruitment process.

I am actively investigating what caused these delays and why I was never briefed on any HACM-related matters until I proactively inquired. Knocking on a door for answers in relation to a situation I am not driving is counterproductive. It should be the other way around. We don’t have time to point fingers. My goal is not to place blame but to highlight the necessity for improved communication between the Mayor’s office and Common Council members and a more transparent process in the recruitment of board members. This is essential for any situation that involves enhancing our city and improving the quality of life for our citizens. While the three nominees are likely great people with high qualifications, I am not ready to offer my support until some of my unanswered questions have been answered. I’ve engaged the emergency brake and have turned on my 4-way hazard flashers. We must get this right.

We must work together more effectively to ensure our city’s operations are streamlined and efficient, particularly in areas as vital as housing.
