A reminder to be safe and respectful during 4th of July celebrations

Statement of Alderman Michael J. Murphy July 3, 2023

By - Jul 3rd, 2023 02:22 pm

As the Independence Day celebrations approach, I would like to encourage residents to refrain from the use of fireworks, especially in residential areas. As a reminder, the use, possession, or sale of fireworks is illegal in the City of Milwaukee, and anyone found violating the city ordinance against the use of fireworks can face a fine of up to $1,000. I ask all residents to abide by this ordinance and forego the use of fireworks, not only to avoid the risk of serious and easily preventable injuries, but also to avoid the anxiety and disruption to quality of life that the unregulated use of fireworks can cause.

However, you can still see fireworks at pre-planned, city-sanctioned events. There are daytime festivities and evening fireworks displays scheduled in several parks during the 4th of July. These represent excellent opportunities for people to safely and legally enjoy fireworks displays. More information on local 4th of July events can be found here.

If you see or hear someone nearby disrupting the peace via fireworks, please call the Milwaukee Police Department non-emergency number at 414-933-4444 to report the situation and to request a police response.
