A Beating Heart of Sisterhood at Acacia

MILWAUKEE (June 3, 2025) – “Jane Austen was dreaming into existence a world where women had a level of autonomy and choice,” director Erin Nicole Eggers muses, “and the adaptors have brought her characters into 2025.” After years of growing up and dreaming big, two dear sisters in the setting of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice are eager for life in Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon. Georgiana plays music about love while hesitating to pursue it; Kitty advocates for her sister’s abilities, through which her own are developed. Amidst romantic intrigue, family presumptions, societal standards, and personal risk, can the sisters protect each other and their peace?

Fit for any season, this delightful production and story follows Acacia’s Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, a box office hit in 2023 and in its 2024 revival. “I think Austen would have been proud of these adaptations,” remarks Eggers. “Gunderson and Melcon follow a romantic comedy template, but the love story at the center of this piece is between the title characters Georgiana and Kitty. Both are feeling a bit like outsiders in different ways at the beginning, searching for their identity and place in the world. The transformative power of community and sisterhood is the beating heart of this play.”

Georgiana and Kitty also has an abundance of humor based in the human experience of family and holiday—“this constant state of smiling is exhausting,” one character declares—which contributes to the play’s charm.

“The women are fully realized: funny, self-aware, flawed, and constantly finding ways to uplift one another,” Eggers reflects, “even when they don’t always see eye to eye. These characters come to a deeper understanding of themselves through their understanding of and appreciation for one another.” It’s a theme for Austen’s era and ours, packaged with care, depth, and joy.
