Residents who rely on the 27th Street viaduct to commute to work, school, shopping, and other locations will need to find new routes effective this coming Monday (February 2).

Effective this coming Monday, Feb. 2nd, 27th Street viaduct over the Menomonee Valley and I-94 will close for up to a year. The closure is taking place because the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be performing work on 27th Street ahead of critical “east leg” construction on the I-94 expansion project.

Additionally, WisDOT will also be closing the eastbound I-94 exit to 26th Street/St. Paul Avenue.

The 27th Street viaduct closure – in addition to the existing closure of the 16th Street viaduct for critical repairs – means commuters and transit users will need to use new routes. The 6th Street viaduct and the 35th Street viaduct remain open, and will be the closest options for most users traversing north and south between the near south side and the near west side and downtown areas.

We urge residents to plan ahead and to pay attention to all traffic and project signage.

With your patience and cooperation, we will make the best of these temporary closures.
