11th Annual Winter Carnival at the Lynden Sculpture Garden, January 28
The Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 W. Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, WI 53217, welcomes winter on Saturday, January 28, 2023, with a day of outdoor art-making, studio activities, nature walks, scavenger hunts, and whatever other winter activities–ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing–the weather permits. The event, which runs from 10 am-4 pm, is free. Lynden’s 11th Annual Winter Carnival is sponsored by Davey Tree Expert.
Afghan women’s advocate, refugee leader, and chef Maryam Durani and her crew offer Afghan and Iranian food specialties from 10 am-3 pm. Don’t forget to bring cash for donations!
For those wanting to learn more about Lynden in winter, Davey Tree Expert will be onsite hosting a tree identification and trivia table and artist-in-residence Angela Kingsawan will be leading a cultural plant walk followed by a “food as medicine” workshop on making apple water. Lynden educator Claudia Orjuela has organized a reindeer scavenger hunt that will take you around the grounds.
There will be plenty of all-ages, artist-run workshops to sample (young children may need parental assistance to participate). You could start by making a winter snowflake painting, collecting found objects for a cyanotype, or collaging an African fabric bookmark. You can continue the winter theme by making snow people paper dolls, or by trying your hand at making edible ornaments for the birds in your neighborhood. We always end the day by dipping candles.
The Milwaukee Disaster Preparedness Taskforce will keep a watchful eye on the proceedings throughout the day.

The site-specific project is an uncompromising exploration of culture’s material footprint and its relationship to the landscape. At 2:30 pm, the artists invite you to collect the “litter tableaux” they have placed across the grounds and bring them together to create a group work before disposing of all materials.

Utilizing authentic African fabrics, beads, buttons, and string, you will create your own one-of-a-kind bookmark. Rhonda Gatlin-Hayes is a self-taught artist inspired by her mother who was an avid self-taught seamstress, quilter, and crafter. Her mixed-media masks cultivate and reflect aspects of the African Diaspora, carrying the message that everyone has worth and that no one should be taken at face value, but that everyone should be looked at more closely, for what lies beneath.
