100th Anniversary of National Bakery & Deli to be recognized during Fat Tuesday Council Meeting

By - Mar 3rd, 2025 08:59 am

The Common Council’s next regularly scheduled meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4 will feature several special recognitions at the start of the meeting, including the 100th Anniversary of National Bakery & Deli. The Council meeting falls on Fat Tuesday, also known as “Paczki Day.”

Paczki are a traditional Polish dessert, which consist of a sweet fried dough filled with jelly or custard. In Poland, the traditional celebration of making paczki would occur on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, also known as Tłusty Czwartek, as a time to make the popular dessert and combine all the lard, sugar and other sweets that Catholics traditionally had to abstain from during the Lenten season that begins on Ash Wednesday. Polish Americans would come to adopt Paczki Day on Fat Tuesday.

Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic is delighted that the next Common Council meeting falls on Paczki Day, and offers an opportunity to highlight this sweet treat and a local institution. “It feels like in Milwaukee on Fat Tuesday, or Paczki Day, everyone is Polish as we come together as a community to enjoy this wonderful treat,” she said. “It’s not often we get to celebrate a milestone anniversary for a business on such a relevant day. National Bakery and Deli in the 14th District has been operating for 100 years, and is known throughout the city as a destination for paczki. They will make and sell tens of thousands of them in all varieties, including my favorite flavor, prune. I can’t wait to honor them, and this wonderful day during tomorrow’s Council meeting.”

Tomorrow’s Council meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the Common Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., and also include a special program in recognition of Women’s History Month. The meeting will be streamed live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
