International peace activist Kathy Kelly, a three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will speak at a Milwaukee Armistice Day event on Friday, Nov.11, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall rotunda. The event is a reminder that Nov. 11 – now a day to honor veterans – was established as a day to promote world peace. World War I, the “war to end all wars” ended on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Thirty million soldiers had been killed or wounded. Kathy Kelly, peace activist, pacifist and author, is co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence in Chicago. As part of a peace team she has traveled to Iraq 26 times, remaining in combat zones during the early days of both US-Iraq wars. Her recent travel has focused on Afghanistan and Gaza, along with domestic protests against U.S. drone policy. She has been arrested in non-violent protests more than 60 times at home and abroad, and written of her experiences among targets of U.S. military bombardment and inmates of U.S. prisons. Her theme on Nov. 11 will be, "Confronting State Violence: an Armistice for our time," connecting the "war against the poor" with wars being waged and planned against people in other lands, including provocation against Russia and China. Drawing from personal experiences living alongside people in war zones and in U.S. Prisons, Kelly will discuss possibilities for peacemaking. The event is co-sponsored by Milwaukee Veterans for Peace, Peace Action Wisconsin, United Nations Association-Greater Milwaukee, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and the Pachamama Alliance.

Award-winning Madison textile artist Leah Evans will speak about her map-inspired work on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library, located on the third floor east wing of the UWM Golda Meir Library, 2311 E. Hartford Ave. Ms. Evans' quilted wall hangings consist of layers using a variety of techniques, including appliqué, piecing, dyeing, and embroidery. She does not use a computer or imaging software in her work, and tries to use hand tools and processes rather than electric. Her current work combines aerial photography, maps, and satellite imagery, but most of her pieces are not consciously based on specific places. Instead, she sees them as explorations of map language and imagined landscapes. Join us to hear Ms. Evans discuss the cartographic influences on her creative process, and see examples of her quilts. Reception at 1:30. Talk at 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Map Society of Wisconsin.

There’s a revolution happening today in the way we value, discover, and imagine the past. On the negative side, ancient sites by the thousands—not only in the Middle East but all over the world—are being bulldozed, looted, vandalized, or blown up. Feature films, bestsellers and specialized cable documentaries hopelessly muddle archaeological fiction and fact. Yet on the positive side, advanced satellite imagery and LIDAR sensors are uncovering complex civilizations in deserts and jungles where none were assumed ever to exist. Virtual reality environments and 3D digital reconstructions are now used both for scientific documentation and immersive museum experiences. And the sheer social reach of Facebook, Twitter, and research-by-crowdsourcing is offering archaeologists unprecedented opportunities to engage the public in their work. This illustrated lecture will highlight some recent discoveries and ongoing controversies in the Americas, Europe, and Asia that exemplify the dramatic new directions that archaeology is taking in our globalized, internet age. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America-Milwaukee Society and the Departments of FLL-Classics, Anthropology and Art History at UWM. It is free and open to the public and followed by free refreshments.

Nearly two years ago President Barack Obama and Cuba's President Raul Castro announced plans to normalize relations. Since then, how much has really changed, and what are the prospects for the future? Two top leaders from the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), will be in Wisconsin to help build bridges of friendship between the people of Cuba and of the United States. Founded in 1960, ICAP has worked to promote solidarity between the people of Cuba and nations worldwide. On November 15 at 7 p.m. hear Sandra Ramirez Rodriguez, Director of the North American Division of ICAP, and Leima Martinez from ICAP's North America Division, speaking on Cuba's perspectives on strengthening ties between our peoples. For example, Cuba is currently providing free medical school to two women from Wisconsin, and its medicines have been credited with prolonging the quality of life for at least one Wisconsin man with advanced lung cancer. What more can be done so that our citizens can travel and trade more freely and learn from each other? For more info contact: LASC 447-8369 or WI Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba 273-1040, www.wicuba.org. The Social Development Commission (SDC) was established in 1963 as an intergovernmental commission and, in 1964, the SDC became the sole Community Action Agency for Milwaukee County. From the very beginning, SDC's mission has been to empower Milwaukee County residents with the resources to move beyond poverty. A few years ago, the agency experienced a time of change as a result of adjustments in leadership and the loss of one of its largest programs. Today, after a great deal of hard work and dedication by the staff and agency commissioners, the SDC is once again on solid ground. Join SDC Executive Director, George Hinton, as he describes the journey to the new Social Development Commission. Although the event is free, registration is required for Program Number: 8300-9698. Milwaukee author Mary J. Dowell will be visiting the Boswell Book Company for a book signing on Friday, November 18th at 7:00 pm. She will discuss and read from her new book, Playing Through the Fence: Stories from 19 Women Who Challenged Stereotypes, Prejudice and Other Barriers to Achieve Career Success. Part memoir, part self-help, Playing Through the Fence is a collection of powerful reflections from women who challenged and overcame obstacles in their personal and professional lives. Within the author’s framework of leadership concepts such as mentoring, networking and family support, women of different backgrounds, race and sexual orientation share their inspirational stories of triumph over the barriers in their paths. A metaphor for these barriers, “The Fence” is part of a story from the author’s childhood and represents the crossroads where struggle meets opportunity. The stories shared by these women illustrate the power of perseverance and choosing the path of opportunity—reminding us that we are not alone and that success, though sometimes appearing elusive, is always within reach. Playing Through the Fence is available at Boswell and through Amazon and HenshelHAUS Publishing. This event is free and open to the public. About the Author: Mary J. Dowell is the principal of MJ Dowell & Associates, a management-consulting group promoting employee engagement and personal and professional growth through speaking events and workshops. After 20 years as a community relations and human resources executive in Fortune 100 & 500 organizations, Mary is an active member of Milwaukee’s business and philanthropic communities. She serves on the board of many organizations, including those focused on the advancement of women leaders, and has received numerous awards for her work.
