UW-Milwaukee Science Bag: Proteins – Magical Workers Inside our Bodies
Proteins are complex molecules responsible with doing most of the work inside our cells and play critical roles related to the structure, function and regulation of our tissues and organs. Join UW-Milwaukee in exploring how proteins are made, how they acquire their structure and how they use this structure to accomplish their functions. Presented by Associate Professor Ionel Popa, Department of Physics. Science Bag is a family-friendly educational program designed to engage all from ages 8 to 88. Shows are every Friday in January at 7 pm plus a matinee on Sunday, January 16 at 2 pm. Location is the UWM Physics Building on the corner of Kenwood and Cramer, Room 137. No registration necessary.

Delve into the astronomy and mythology behind the zodiac and learn how to find your zodiac constellation in the night sky. In this live, interactive show, we will explore the stories and science of the zodiac constellations with a focus on what makes this month’s constellation, Aquarius, unique. The program will include an indoor stargazing session of the night sky followed by the opportunity to ask questions. Not recommended for children under 4. For questions about this event, please email planetarium@uwm.edu. Please note that masks are currently required inside all University buildings, including the planetarium, regardless of vaccination status.

Masks are encouraged but not required. // Jorge Vallentine: Merging folk, rock, and punk influences from acts such as Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, and Violent Femmes, Jorge Vallentine finds catharsis in his unique style, which ranges from bittersweet, fingerpicked ballads to blistering, rhythmic tracks. In early 2020, he was selected to perform at Milwaukee's PrideFest as part of folk duo Feral Rabbit and he has twice been featured at the legendary Linneman's Riverwest Inn open mic. A prolific songwriter, Jorge has penned over 100 songs in just the past few years and is now recording his debut release. Anja Elise: Anja Elise is a Milwaukee-based artist who has been writing music and performing locally for almost three years, and over a decade of experience throughout her life. Eerie melodies, extremely personal lyrics, and unconventional song structures make up her definitive style. She recently released her debut record titled “Salt & Sugar” on December 11th, 2020. Anja has worked with many local powerhouses in the Milwaukee music scene, including Kevin and Will Bush of Immortal Girlfriend and Ben Harold of Ben Harold and the Rising. With airplay on 88.9 Radio Milwaukee, interviews on Riverwest Radio, a spot with Heist TV, and multiple performances on Amplified Artist Sessions, she's been making a splash on the local scene. Anja looks forward to continue writing and collaborating on projects with other musicians, and looking forward to releasing another project in the future! The very funny Geoffrey Asmus (FOX’s ‘Laughs’ and Kevin Hart’s LOL Network) headlines Milwaukee’s Home for Comedy! Geoffrey Asmus began performing stand-up in 2013 immediately after wasting $143,548 on four college degrees. Within a short time Geoffrey won Comedy on State’s “Funniest Person in Madison 2015” and Penguin Comedy Club’s “Funniest Person in Iowa 2015,” both times beating out the guy who invented meth, Quentin. Soon after, Geoffrey was selected as a ‘New Face’ at Just For Laughs in Montreal and performed on FOX’s ‘Laughs’ and Kevin Hart’s LOL Network. Geoffrey has opened for Dave Attell, Daniel Sloss, Joe List and Apa Covid-19 POLICY (in effect as of 9/17/21): The Laughing Tap requires proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test to attend our shows . This policy is for the safety of our guests, comics, and staff, and is inline with other venues in Milwaukee and NOT a political statement. • Accepted proof of Covid Vaccination card must match your name on a state or federal photo ID.
