Black Nativity is a heartwarming and moving gospel song play by Langston Hughes. The power of gospel music, telling the story of this beloved, family friendly classic that began with the first star in Bethlehem almost two thousand years ago. Black Nativity 2016 will link this story of hope to relevant themes occurring throughout our community and the country today. Directed by Bronzeville Arts Ensemble’s Producing Artistic Director, Malkia Stampley. Music direction by Antoine Reynolds, choreography by Marvette Knight. Black Nativity is Co-Produced by Black Arts MKE and Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

Free Public Archaeology Lecture: Neighborhood Society – Ancient and Modern by Dr. David Pacifico

In this lecture Dr. David Pacifico presents his research on ancient urban neighborhoods in Peru and compares them with the society and cultures of modern urban neighborhoods. Specifically, this lecture details social diversity, urban economies, and politics in a commoner neighborhood at El Purgatorio, capital of the Casma culture in 13th century Peru. From the capital, the lecture moves outward to present preliminary findings from ongoing research on hinterland communities around El Purgatorio. Finally, David explores the meaning of these findings with respect to our understanding of modern urban neighborhoods and cultures.

Join us for our 3rd annual Larry Penn Memorial Concert featuring Lil Rev, Patty Stevenson & Craig Siemen, Mark Dvorak, Will Branch, Brett Kemnitz, Bob & Diane Suckiel, and more! Together we will be celebrating Larry’s legacy in song, story, poetry and lore. Larry was best known for the songs he wrote about work, labor, social justice and trains, but he also sang about love and wrote songs for children. Larry was a married father of five, a truck driver, a wooden toy maker, a union member and lover of trains, planes and trucks. He leaves behind his music for us to enjoy.
