January 18, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am
Event Navigation
Kids Impact Community is excited to offer a virtual all-ages celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day through an engaging story time with music and movement, an on-the-spot service project and community art activity.
It’s never too early to talk to our kids about race and the Civil Rights Movement. By 6 months of age, babies are noticing racial differences; by age 4, children have begun to show signs of racial bias. We have invited a special guest reader to read “Let’s Talk About Race” by Julius Lester. This powerful book discusses race in a very concrete and accessible way–easy for even the youngest children to understand.
On this National Day of Service, we will engage our children as dynamic and change-making citizens in an on-the-spot pantry raid following the reading of “Maddie’s Fridge” and a thoughtful chat about food insecurity. All pantry raid food items will be donated to Food is Free MKE. Drop off your donations at designated locations throughout the week or directly at Food is Free MKE the following Saturday.
Lachrissa Grandberry, proud and loud professional actor and teaching artist with a huge smile most recently working with The Second City in Chicago, will be guiding our kiddos through some music and movement breaks throughout the event!
Finally, we will conclude our event with introducing a community art activity. Art Kit pick-up instructions will be provided following registration. We challenge your family to make a commitment to service over the next year. Paint how you will make change in our community on a 6×6” canvas square. Like a quilt, these squares will be combined into a traveling art exhibit displayed at locations throughout the area.
