Paul Florsheim will discuss his recent book “Lost and Found: Young Fathers in the Age of Unwed Parenthood” in conversation with Teran Powell, Race and Ethnicity reporter at WUWM.

About the book:

Over the past six decades, there have been dramatic changes in the dynamics of family life in the United States. Today, about half of all babies born to mothers under the age of 25 will not live with their fathers for much of their childhood. Drawing from their research with young parents in Chicago and Salt Lake City, Florsheim and Moore chronicle the lives of several fathers as they transition to parenthood, weaving social history, developmental psychology and family therapy into their stories. “Lost and Found” concludes with an innovative proposal for father-inclusive prenatal care to help stabilize young families. “Lost and Found” is written to be accessible to non-academics by helping the reader make sense of what is happening to fatherhood in America in a way that is engaging and compelling and ultimately hopeful.

About the speakers:

Paul Florsheim is Professor of Community and Behavioral Health Promotion at UWM’s Joseph J Zilber School of Public Health where he teaches classes on public health and mental health. Paul continues to work with young fathers and mothers in Milwaukee, both as a researcher and a clinician. He also does research on child and adolescent mental health services and child abuse prevention.

Teran Powell is WUWM’s race & ethnicity reporter. She was selected as the station’s very first Eric Von Fellow after graduating from Marquette University with a degree in journalism. She has been a reporter for Marquette student media and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, and has freelanced for the Shepherd Express and Fox 6 News.
