PRESENCE & PERSISTENCE: VISIONS OF AMERICAN BLACKNESS
Frederick Layton Gallery
The work of Sandra Bridges, David Anderson, Chrystal Denise Gillon ‘98 and Jerry Jordan all depict Black lives in America from their own perspectives, ranging from black-and-white renderings to paintings and collage work. The essential humanity and spirit embodied in these artworks speaks out in opposition to the continued marginalization and racism that continues to plague our country in the 21st century.
GREAT IDEAS OF HUMANITY: POSTERS FOR THOUGHT
Brooks Stevens Gallery
From 1950-1975, Chicago-based Container Corporation of America ran a campaign heralded as one of the best in advertising history, Great Ideas of Western Man. The world has changed since 1975, but great ideas are timeless. The Design Museum of Chicago has brought the series into the 21st century and commissioned contemporary artists and designers to create visual responses to Great Ideas of Humanity. Like the original series, the contemporary work does not advertise a product, but an ethos to make the world a better place via thoughtful design. This exhibition features posters and art objects by 60+ artists and designers, alongside reproductions of the original advertising campaign.
