Golden Eagles Shut Out St. Thomas in Season Opener, 4-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Marquette University women’s soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) opened the 2026 campaign with a 3-0 victory at St. Thomas (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Summit League) on Wednesday in non-conference action.
Megan Murray opened the scoring in the fifth minute, converting a free kick from just outside the box. Her attempt took a deflection off the St. Thomas wall before finding the back of the net to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Later at the 24:16 mark, the Golden Eagles doubled their advantage on a perfectly placed free kick from midfield by Lilly Coats. It marked the first goal of Coats’ collegiate career.
Marquette added to its advantage later in the half, with Ella McAleenan heading one home, following a corner kick to make it 3-0 headed into the break.
The Golden Eagles extended its lead in the second half at the 58:18 mark when freshman Callie Hefner found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career. Hefner, fired a shot into the top-right corner to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 advantage.
NOTES:
- Golden Eagles improve to 5-0-1 all-time against St. Thomas.
- Megan Murray scored her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career.
- Lilly Coats found the back of the net for the first time in her career.
- Kylie McMinn, who missed the entire 2025 season due to injury, returned to the pitch.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Aug. 16, when they travel to North Dakota State. Kickoff against the Bison is set for 1 p.m. CT.
