Public Safety and Health Committee to Discuss Trio of Files Related to Electric Scooters
Tomorrow (Thursday, July 2), the Common Council’s Public Safety and Health Committee will hear three files related to the operation of electric scooters. All three files are sponsored by Alderman Robert J. Bauman.
The first file (#260340) is a communication from the Department of Public Works relating to the safety protocols in place for the operation and storage of electric scooters, with an emphasis on operating on sidewalks. The second file (#260349) is an ordinance relating to penalties for operating electric scooters on public sidewalks. The file proposes increasing the forfeiture for operating an electric scooter on a public sidewalk from between $10 and $20 to between $100 and $200. The final file (#260365) is a substitute resolution relating to the establishment of a 5-mile-per-hour maximum operating speed within Zone 1 of the Dockless Scooter Program in the 4th Aldermanic District.
“A couple of weeks ago, a man was seriously injured by a person who was riding a scooter on the sidewalk in an area that sees heavy foot traffic. Since scooters were introduced in Milwaukee, sidewalk riding has been rampant. It feels like it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously hurt,” said Ald. Bauman. “These files being heard tomorrow give us an opportunity to review what has and hasn’t worked in regards to scooters, and implement measures that increase safety and stiffen penalties for offenders.”
The Public Safety and Health Committee meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. in room 301-B on the third floor of City Hall, 200 E. Wells St. The meeting will be streamed live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
