On April 25, Help Clean Area Rivers & Shatter a World Record
Milwaukee Riverkeeper and Tru Earth Team Up on the Record-Breaking Attempt
MILWAUKEE, WI – This year’s Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup could be one for the history books, literally. This annual tradition of conservation, community, and the Milwaukee River Basin brings together more than 4,000 volunteers annually to collect and remove more than 100,000 pounds of trash in only a few short hours! This April, event organizers, partners, and volunteers will attempt to officially break a world record for the most volunteers participating in a multiple-site, one-day river cleanup.
The current record was set last March by volunteers in the UK who cleaned up the River Taff. “For years, Milwaukee Riverkeeper volunteers have quietly and unknowingly eclipsed the world record for the largest river cleanup,” said Tru Earth CEO Brad Liski. “Tru Earth got involved to shine a bright spotlight on this annual Earth Month tradition and to help ensure the Milwaukee Riverkeeper team, and all of the everyday Greater Milwaukeeans who participate, receive the worldwide recognition they truly deserve.”
On Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. – noon, thousands of volunteers will gather at more than 100 locations across Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Waukesha, and Washington Counties to roll up their sleeves and remove litter, plastic, and other pollution from Milwaukee-area rivers and green spaces.
“Healthy rivers are built over time, not in a single day,” said Jennifer Bolger Breceda, Executive Director of Milwaukee Riverkeeper. “It takes ongoing dedication from individuals, organizations, and communities working together year-round. A cleaner river doesn’t happen by chance, it happens because people show up. This record attempt is a celebration of the commitment people have shown to our shared waters for over 30 years – and a call to keep going.”
Help Shatter a World Record April 25
To participate in the record-breaking attempt, volunteers need to pre-register and promptly be at one of the pre-determined clean-up locations by 9 a.m.
“There will be a countdown, and then the official attempt will begin,” Bolger-Breceda explained. “With the addition this year of the world record attempt, we’ll need additional volunteers to help count participants, as well as environmental experts and students to serve as witnesses to document the clean-up specifics for the on-site official who can’t observe all of the cleanup sites.”
Volunteers who want to be a part of this historic attempt and help clean up the river can sign up here: https://milwaukeeriverkeeper.org/event/spring-cleanup/. All Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup participants will receive a free commemorative T-Shirt (while supplies last).
A World-Record Caliber After Party with Rock the Green
After the Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup, volunteers can join partners and organizers at a free Earth Day celebration with Rock the Green. This zero-waste after party, which will be at the Harley Davidson Museum (400 W. Canal St. in Milwaukee) from noon – 3 p.m., will feature a live concert on a pedal-powered stage. There will also be free beer (while supplies last) for Spring Cleanup volunteers. In addition, volunteers can take home a native shrub to plant (while supplies last).
