MADISON, WI – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #285, calling the State Legislature into a special session at noon on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 for the purposes of amending the constitution to ban partisan gerrymandering in Wisconsin. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #285, which calls the State Legislature into a special session at noon on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 for the purposes of amending the constitution to ban partisan gerrymandering in Wisconsin.

For years, Wisconsin had some of the most gerrymandered legislative maps in America. When Governor Evers signed our new, fair legislative maps into law on February 19, 2024, he ensured that every Wisconsinite would have a fair chance at electing their representation in our State Legislature.

Unfortunately, our legislative maps, which are redrawn every 10 years, are heavily susceptible to partisan bias. Wisconsin is not a blue or a red state—it is a purple state, and our legislative maps should continuously reflect the values and opinions of all Wisconsinites.

We need a nonpartisan, independent, and fair redistricting process that responds to the will of the people, not partisan politics. The proposed constitutional amendment would guarantee a Wisconsin where every voice matters and where every voice counts.

I salute Governor Evers for his continued dedication to fair, safe, and secure elections and hope to see the State Legislature take up this important constitutional amendment.”
