TORY FOLLIARD GALLERY is pleased to announce a new exhibition:

Here’s looking at You! The Portrait in Contemporary Art

April 17 – May 30, 2026

Artists’ Reception: Gallery Night, Friday, April 17, 5 – 8pm

Artists’ Panel Discussion led by Fred Stonehouse: Saturday, May 16, 1:30 – 2:30pm

This exhibition brings together contemporary Midwestern artists who explore the portrait as both a mirror and a metaphor. Their works range from the representational to the highly stylized, reflecting on how likeness, identity and imagination coexist in modern portraiture.

Drawing from Catherine Soussloff’s The Subject in Art: Portraiture and the Birth of the Modern, the exhibition considers her idea that portraits reveal both outward resemblance and inner spirit. These artists question what “truth” means in depicting a face or figure – whether through TL Solien’s fantastical, otherworldly characters or photographer Tom Jones‘s deeply grounded portrayal of his Ho-Chunk community. Together, their works move fluidly along the continuum between realism and invention, reaffirming portraiture as a powerful lens for understanding what it means to see and be seen today.
