WBB Heads East for Matchup With Seton Hall
MILWAUKEE – Coming off its first bye of BIG EAST play, the Marquette women’s basketball team heads to the East Coast for a date with Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J., on Wednesday night. The two teams split last season’s series, with each winning on the other’s home court.
THE STARTING FIVE
- Marquette is coming off its fourth game this season holding an opponent under 50 points after holding Creighton to 49 last Thursday, a season-low point total for CU. It was the third-fewest points in a game for the Bluejays in the series, and the fewest since Feb. 6, 2022 (47).
- Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures against Creighton, the sixth time they have done that this season. Five of those have come in the last eight games after just one such game in the team’s first eight games of the season.
- Olivia Porter became the fifth Golden Eagle this season to post a 20-point performance, scoring a career-high 23 points against Creighton. It was the first 20-point game of the senior’s career.
- In what was viewed as a weakness in Cara Consuegra‘s first year, the 3-ball has become a strength for the Golden Eagles in Year 2 following an offseason commitment from her team. MU sits second in the country at 39.9%, a 9.2% increase from last year. Six of the eight players with at least 10 attempts are shooting above a 40% clip.
- Marquette’s strength this season comes in its experience and continuity as the program is the only one in Division I women’s college basketball to return all of its players from the 2024-25 season.
BY THE NUMBERS
13.0 – During the past three games, Marquette has outrebounded its opponents by an average of 13.0. MU is 10-0 this season when outrebounding its opponent.
33.37 – Skylar Forbes and Halle Vice rank No. 2 and No. 4 in BIG EAST games in scoring. Their 33.37 points per game is just 0.01 shy of the top scoring duo of UConn’s Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd.
62.3 – Since being held to 3-of-10 shooting at UConn on Dec. 17, Halle Vice is shooting 62.3% from the field (38-of-61) and 80.0% from 3 (8-of-10). Vice ranks 19th in the NCAA in field-goal percentage at 58.5%.
HISTORY WITH THE PIRATES
- Marquette and Seton Hall will meet for the 34th time in their history.
- Marquette holds the series lead at 21-12.
- The Golden Eagles have won three of the five meetings with the Pirates during the last three seasons.
- The two teams split last year’s series, with each winning on the other’s home court.
- Seton Hall won by six in Milwaukee before Marquette repaid the favor with a seven-point win in South Orange.
LINING UP THE 20s
On Jan. 8, Olivia Porter became the fifth Golden Eagle to post a 20-point game this season, scoring career-high 23 points against Creighton. All five primary Marquette starters have at least one 20-point game this year.
- MU’s starters have combined to post 13 20-point games this season
SHARING THE ROCK
With an uptick in scoring since the start of December, part of that can be attributed to Marquette’s ball movement. MU recorded its fourth, fifth and sixth games this year with 20 or more assists this month. The Golden Eagles sit 12th in the NCAA in assists per game at 19.0.
- Marquette is very balanced in its distribution with five players averaging between 2.2-4.3 assists per game.
DIVERSIFYING THE OPTIONS
While Skylar Forbes is the Golden Eagles’ top scorer at 16.6 points per game, three others have shown that they too can carry the scoring load. Three of MU’s other starters–Jaidynn Mason, Halle Vice, Lee Volker–are also averaging double figures.
- Each of the four have led MU in scoring this season and all four have each posted at least one 20-point game.
A WALKING DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Recording her sixth double-double of the season on Jan. 4, Halle Vice leads the BIG EAST in the category. The junior had just one double-double through the first five weeks of the season but recorded five during a six-game stretch from Dec. 14-Jan. 4.
- The four straight games with a double-double is the longest stretch of consecutive double-doubles by a Golden Eagle since Erika Davenport had a double-double in five straight games in 2019 (Jan. 11-25).
- Vice’s six double-doubles ranks 36th in the NCAA.
VICE GRIP
- Vice has had double-digit rebounding numbers seven times this season.
- Vice’s career-high 19 rebounds at Xavier were the second-most by a BIG EAST player this season.
ONE OF FOUR
Not just a shot blocker, not just a 3-point shooter, Skylar Forbes is proving early this season that she is both. Forbes is currently shooting 41.9% from deep (34th) while also posting 1.67 blocks per game (48th).
- Forbes is one of players in the country currently averaging 1.6 blocks per game and shooting over 40% from 3 (min. 20 attempts). Forbes has attempted 86 3-pointers, 55 more than the next most among the four.
