Southside Catholic, Jesuit School Unveiled “Nicholas Family Field” for Students and Community

MILWAUKEE – Nativity Jesuit Academy hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the new playfield and pedestrian mall, the “Nicholas Family Field,” on Friday, November 7, 2025.

Previously, Nativity students only had access to an asphalt parking lot for outdoor activities. Now, the space features an artificial soccer field, basketball court, and four-square courts. When school is not in session, the field will be open to the public.

“At Nativity, our tradition has been to be an active participant in the Milwaukee community. The Nicholas Family Field is a way for us to think beyond our school by helping fill a need on the southside of Milwaukee,” said Vanessa Solis, Nativity’s president. “With a new soccer field and basketball court, this space will bring people together to enjoy a safe and spacious environment for staying active. We are incredibly grateful to the Lori and David Nicholas Family Foundation for their unwavering commitment. Their generosity will have an impact that lasts generations.”

With the City’s recommendation and approval, Nativity has removed approximately 180 feet of pavement along S. 29th Street. This transformation is expected to improve public safety by calming traffic and reducing vehicle speeds on nearby side streets. In addition, concrete planters have been added to prevent vehicle access, beautify the neighborhood, and create communal safe spaces. This project is part of Nativity’s continued commitment to serving not only its students but also the broader Southside community.

“This outdoor space is a great addition for Nativity Jesuit Academy students, and it’s also a great addition for the neighborhood and for the city,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson said. “I appreciate the school’s vision that brought this project to fruition, and I thank the partners and funders who made this possible.”
