Grand opening of state’s largest private inclusive housing project set for Nov. 20
On Thursday, November 20 at 11:30 a.m. elected officials, project partners, and community members will celebrate the grand opening of The Corliss, the largest private affordable housing development in Wisconsin history located at 145 E. Becher St. Media coverage is invited.
“This site was home to vacant buildings and a former landfill. Neighbor feedback played a crucial role in modifying the first proposal, which was amended to include design updates, a public multi-modal path, and dedicated units for seniors. This development not only brings our words into action on being a welcoming and inclusive community, but it also will provide a positive economic boost to our area and the city, as the thousands of new neighbors who will call The Corliss home will work at and visit local businesses,” said Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic. “The City supported this project in the form of a $9.2 million Tax Incremental Financing district, $835,000 from the Housing Trust Fund, and RACM provided a brownfield loan for $1.25 million. Support was also received from the State of Wisconsin and private partners who believed in this vision. They all played a key role, and I extend my sincere thanks to each of them, as well as my Council colleagues for their continued support.”
“One thing my office hears regularly from young professionals, teachers, local artists, as well as parents and elders, is that they love our community and they want to be able to stay and age in place. With the opening of The Corliss, we are reinforcing the message to our residents that we hear you, and we want you to stay,” Ald. Dimitrijevic continued.
Those attending the grand opening should gather in the lobby of 145 E. Becher St. A short program will begin at 11:30 a.m. and include remarks from Ald. Dimitrijevic, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, S.R. Mills, President of Bear Development, as well as representatives from Citi Bank and US Bank. At the conclusion of remarks, a ribbon cutting will take place, followed by tours of several units and other on-site amenities.
