Supervisor Steve F. Taylor Authors Amendment to Strengthen Milwaukee County’s Redistricting Process
MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Supervisor Steve F. Taylor has authored a 2026 budget amendment directing the County Clerk and Corporation Counsel to conduct a comprehensive, cost-conscious review of the independent redistricting process used for the 2022 supervisory district plan. The amendment was unanimously approved by the Committee on Finance at its most recent meeting.
“I believe voters should choose who represents them—not politicians choosing who they want to represent. That’s why I authored an amendment to the 2026 recommended budget to review the independent redistricting process used for the 2022 supervisory plan,” said Supervisor Taylor.
The review will focus exclusively on the process and ordinance language—not the creation of new maps—and will engage key stakeholders, including Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) staff, retired judges who served on the Independent Redistricting Committee, and other participants from the 2022 cycle. Supervisor Taylor added:
“This review is about good government and protecting taxpayers. By identifying what worked well and what didn’t, we can strengthen our redistricting process and avoid the kind of last-minute fixes that invite confusion or legal challenges. This is how we ensure fairness and transparency in the way Milwaukee County draws its district boundaries.”
Under the amendment, the County Clerk and Corporation Counsel will evaluate Milwaukee County General Ordinance § 3.01 — Apportionment of County Board and recommend any ordinance revisions necessary to improve efficiency and accountability. A written report summarizing the findings, lessons learned, and recommended changes will be delivered to the County Board by September 2026, ensuring the County is fully prepared ahead of the 2030 census and 2032 election cycle. The amendment carries no tax levy impact.
