Make sure furnace season isn’t dead on arrival
Statement from Alderman Lamont Westmoreland September 18, 2025
Soon, “furnace season” will be upon us. That time of year when the leaves start to fall, the air gets crisp, and we all hope our furnaces turn on without a hitch.
This year, though, things may look a little different. With the recent flooding, many furnaces may have been affected – even in basements where it didn’t seem like much water got in. Before the cold sets in, it’s important to test your furnace now to make sure it actually turns on and runs properly. If you notice anything unusual – strange noises, smells, or no heat at all – better to address any issues now rather than finding out on the first cold night.
Relying on space heaters as a backup can be risky. Not only are they hard to find when everyone is scrambling for one, but they also carry safety concerns if used incorrectly. Taking the simple step of testing your furnace now means you won’t have to depend on them when the temperatures drop.
I know it’s easy to put furnace maintenance out of mind until something goes wrong, but a quick check now can save you a lot of stress later. For your comfort and peace of mind, please make sure your furnace is ready before the real cold arrives.
