RedLine was founded in 2008 as an incubator for emerging and mid-career artists in Milwaukee. Its mission: to provide a vibrant gathering place for artists of all ages and mediums and to stimulate the creative potential of the community.

More than just a gallery, RedLine strives to be an active member of Milwaukee’s artistic community through shows, classes and its residency program. The space also boasts a print shop and video lounge, providing access to young and emerging artists to the mediums they want to create in. The artist-in residence program provides subsidized studio space to participants and puts them all under one roof, so that the artists can interact and learn from one another as they move forward personally and professionally.

In exchange for the the subsidized studio and exhibition space, the residents must take part in RedLine’s education programs throughout their residency, often working with teenagers in the area to help them build self-esteem and creative self-expression through art.

The Resident Artists of RedLine are nearly halfway through their two-year commitment, and this Friday, March 12 RedLine will showcase the work that these gifted artists have done in the past year, highlighting their growth as artists. Each artist-in-residence has selected one or two pieces that they created before being accepted to RedLine, and one or two that they have created since. These pieces will be displayed side by side, allowing both the public and the artists themselves to see their development over the last six months.

While some of the residents have changed only marginally in their style and medium, others have exhibited drastic shifts in focus that are  quite breathtaking to behold. Stylistically and expressively, these artists are growing, stretching, reaching new heights and breaking through old personal boundaries. They are, in fact, embodying the mission of RedLine in their work.
