City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works Flood Recovery Update-august 27, 2025
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works is continuing efforts to cleanup and restore services following a historic flooding event. We are pleased to announce that recycling collection will resume on schedule starting tomorrow, Thursday, August 28.
Please note that collection will follow the regular schedule, not where service left off prior to the pause. Residents should place their recycling carts out on their regular pickup day. Schedules can be viewed at milwaukee.gov/collectionday. While we are able to resume recycling collection, we are not able to accommodate any past special requests for pickup. Residents may place extra recyclable materials outside of the recycling cart for collection, but those materials must be placed in a cardboard box. Items placed in bags will not be accepted. Additional cardboard will also be accepted, but it must be broken down and free of Styrofoam and other packing material and placed next to or on top of the recycling cart. Residents may also utilize our Drop-Off Centers for any additional recycling needs. Normal recyclable materials are always accepted at no charge at the Drop-Off Centers.
Free special bulky item pickup continues this week for households with City garbage collection service. Collections are underway across the City. To date, crews have serviced approximately 15,000 homes. Residents have until Sunday, August 31 to request special pickup. While cleanup will continue beyond that date, August 31 is the final day to submit requests. Residents can request pickup by calling 414-286-CITY, visiting milwaukee.gov/clickforaction, or using the MKE Mobile app.
The South (Lincoln Ave) and North (Industrial Road) Drop-Off Centers remain free to City residents through Sunday, August 31, operating on a regular schedule: Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed on Mondays. Staff are on-site to assist with traffic and answer questions. These are self-service locations, and residents are responsible for unloading their own materials. Lines may be cut off before closing to ensure all vehicles already in line can be served.
Some non-emergency services, such as routine boulevard maintenance, are resuming gradually as resources allow. Brush collection remains suspended until further notice.
Electrical services operations have returned to normal following restoration work addressing flood-related outages.
We sincerely thank the public for their continued patience and understanding as we work towards a return to normal operations. Our crews are still working diligently on flood recovery, while also trying to restore services as quickly as possible. Residents can report any issues or service requests by calling 414-286-CITY, visiting milwaukee.gov/clickforaction, or using the MKE Mobile app.
