KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College will hold a daylong program supporting those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence.

“Healing the Healers: Approaches to Gun Violence Exposure and Recovery” will take place Saturday, March 29, at Wartburg Theatre on the Carthage campus, 2001 Alford Park Drive. Participants will learn about different approaches to healing and recovery, connect with others who share similar experiences, and gain valuable insights from experts in the field.

There is no admission charge for this event, which begins with check-in at 2 p.m. Throughout the day, gun violence prevention advocates and healthcare providers will lead sessions covering trauma recovery, youth impact, and public policy. Confirmed speakers and panelists include:

  • Dr. Kellie Snooks, pediatric critical care physician in the Milwaukee area
  • Denzell Brown, founder and executive director of the Brave Behind the Bullet initiative
  • Dr. Halleh Akbarnia, emergency medicine physician in the Chicago area
  • Dr. Nina Agrawal, child abuse pediatrician in New York

The program will culminate with a 7:30 p.m. Carthage Theatre premiere of “Terminal Exhale,” based on gripping real-life interviews with doctors, nurses, surgeons, and mental health providers who work to save the lives of gun violence victims on a daily basis. A talk-back with cast and creative team members will take place after the performance.

“Terminal Exhale” is part of Carthage’s Verbatim Theatre initiative, which Professor Martin McClendon started 10 years ago. Giving voice to the unheard stories in our community, verbatim theatre transforms real interview transcripts into play scripts, raising awareness for various social issues. Carthage verbatim projects have earned five national Citizen Artist Awards over the last eight years in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

The Carthage Nursing, Social Work, and Theatre departments are co-sponsoring this special program along with Everytown for Gun Safety and the 80% Coalition. Free admission covers the afternoon program, a buffet dinner, and the theatre performance. Space is limited, however, so advance registration is required.
