Carthage College and Urban Learning Collaborative Partner to Prepare Future Teachers
KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College and the Urban Learning Collaborative (ULC) have joined forces to train the next generation of Wisconsin teachers and address the state’s growing teacher shortage.
The partnership combines Carthage’s nationally recognized educator preparation programs with ULC’s expertise in developing and mentoring teachers in urban school communities.
“We believe that great teachers are developed through meaningful preparation, strong mentorship, and deep connections to the communities they serve,” said Laci Coppins Robbins, executive director of the nonprofit ULC, which is based in West Allis. “Our partnership with Carthage College brings together two organizations with a shared commitment to educational excellence and equitable opportunities for Wisconsin students.”
Carthage’s Accelerated Certification for Teachers (ACT) to M.Ed. program prepares individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in any field to enter the teaching profession. ULC mentors aspiring educators while they serve as teachers in urban school communities. Together, the two organizations create an affordable, practice-based pathway that allows teacher candidates to learn while they lead classrooms.
“ULC has a strong reputation for collaboration and mentorship that includes academic and professional development, extending through certification into leadership development and community engagement,” said Siovahn Temple, Carthage’s associate dean for education.
As they complete licensure requirements, participants will experience intensive mentoring, classroom-based clinical experiences, and graduate-level coursework.

Together, we are investing in educators who will inspire and support generations of students.”
