No. 11/11 #MUBB Falls at No. 12/10 St. John’s, 70-64
Golden Eagles travel to Creighton Saturday afternoon
The No. 11/11 Marquette University men’s basketball team (18-5, 9-3 BIG EAST) continued BIG EAST play with a 70-64 loss at No. 10/12 St. John’s (20-3, 11-1 BIG EAST) in Madison Square Garden.
Guard Kam Jones scored 15 points and Chase Ross added 16 points and a career-high tying eight rebounds..
The back-and-forth contest came down to the final minutes in the matchup between two top-15 teams. Marquette, which battled foul trouble the entire evening, was unable to keep the Red Storm off the free throw line down the stretch. The Golden Eagle shot just under 30 percent from the floor in the second half, but were able to take a 55-54 lead on a 3-pointer by Jones with 5:20 left in regulation.Marquette led 31-30 at the intermission after shooting 56.5 percent from the floor. The Golden Eagles fell behind in the opening minutes after netting the first basket of the game, but used a 13-2 run to get back into the game. Lowery finished with 10 points to lead the team and Kam Jones battled through foul trouble, playing just 11 minutes.
Notables:
- Marquette’s 22 bench points were its most since at Seton Hall (24)
- Guard Chase Ross finished with double figures for the fourth-straight game, the first time in his career
- Guard Zaide Lowery finished with a career-high 12 points
