Trump Executive Action on K-12 Education reads like something out of North Korea, not the Land of the Free
Madison, WI – The United States, for all its flaws, continues to be the Land of the Free. Unfortunately, the President of the United States does not see it that way, if his January 29th executive action on K-12 education is any indication. It seems Mr. Trump would rather have an education system more akin to North Korea or Soviet-era Russia than one that teaches critical thinking, rewards curiosity, and is inclusive of everyone.
It is patriotic to teach the truth about American history, so we might learn from the tragedies of our past, be skeptical of fairytale narratives that try to paper over the truth, and continue to build a strong base of knowledge in the population.
It is repugnant and detrimental to the future of our nation to threaten federal funding for schools that choose to teach kids to think for themselves, that support the whole child, and that won’t be bullied into submission by an adjudicated rapist, felon, and would-be dictator.
The kind of federal overreach Mr. Trump is proposing is contrary to the very idea of freedom we as Americans value so highly.
