Advocacy Group Releases Groundbreaking Report on Milwaukee County Sentencing Patterns around felony Reckless Driving.
Milwaukee, WI – “Sunlight is the best disinfectant,” declared Robert Donovan on a brisk morning last March, urging Governor Evers to sign Senate Bill 514, which imposes tougher penalties on reckless drivers, including mandatory minimums for causing great bodily harm or death.
At the same press conference, Enough is Enough ~ A Legacy for Erin, an advocacy group committed to ending reckless driving, unveiled one strategy to combat the problem – through shedding light on judicial sentencing trends in Milwaukee County.
Since June, 2024, after monitoring over 200 cases, Court Watch Program findings reflect the outcomes of a subset of 109 sentenced and fully concluded cases, in two reports. Judges ruled more leniently than the District Attorney’s recommendations 69% of the time.
Key findings include:
- Tougher Sentencing Needed: Judges must prioritize penalties that deter future reckless driving.
- Reduce Dismissals: Plea bargains often undermine public safety by dismissing severe charges.
- Community Protection First: Sentencing must prioritize the safety of Milwaukee residents.
“We need accountability from both offenders and the judges who preside over these cases,” said Jeanne Lupo, President of Enough is Enough. “Our community deserves better protections from reckless driving.”
The Court Watch Program is powered by 16 dedicated volunteers. Their work emphasizes the urgent need for judicial reforms to ensure Milwaukee’s roads are safer for all.
