Milwaukee County DHHS Housing Services Has Record Month Connecting People to Permanent Housing
This comes during Homelessness Awareness Week, October 27 – November 2
MILWAUKEE– The Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is proud to announce a record-breaking month in its efforts to connect individuals and families to permanent housing. The DHHS Housing Navigation team, has successfully assisted 42 people in October in securing safe and stable housing, marking a significant achievement in Milwaukee County’s ongoing commitment to ending homelessness.
“Our Housing Navigation team is at the forefront of our efforts to combat homelessness,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “Their hard work and dedication have transformed the lives of many individuals and families in our community. Housing is at the heart of the social determinants of health. This ongoing work done by the DHHS Housing Services team is vital to the Milwaukee County vision that by achieving racial equity, Milwaukee is the healthiest county in Wisconsin.”
The DHHS Housing Navigation team employs a collaborative approach, working closely with landlords and the Milwaukee County Housing Authority to secure housing for individuals with diverse backgrounds. Many of those assisted were nearing chronic homelessness, with some spending near12 months on the streets, while others are newly entering the county’s homeless response system. The individuals served primarily consist of single men and women, with a smaller percentage of families, prioritizing individuals with longer history of homelessness that also have acute mental health concerns.
“Each success story is a testament to our team’s commitment to our mission of ending someone’s cycle of homelessness,” said James Mathy, DHHS Housing Services Administrator. “Effective homeless outreach should always be rooted in placing people into housing.”
