Milwaukee Film Announces Lineup of Films in Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

MILWAUKEE – Monday, August 26th – Milwaukee Film is thrilled to present a program of fantastic, powerful films in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month 2024. With a Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning drama, two empowering documentary features, and the return of the annual shorts program from Femme Frontera, this selection of films promises to explore and unpack issues surrounding identity, culture, family, history, and modernity within the Latinx diaspora, including stories from the Chicanx, Latin American, Indigenous, and Afro-Latinx communities.

Milwaukee Film’s Cine Sin Fronteras programmer Ernie Quiroz said, “I’m proud that Milwaukee Film is once again celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a slate of films by, for, and about Hispanic and Indigenous people. Documentary, drama, shorts, and features—all celebrate the contributions and experiences of Latinx people with the hope of building understanding and respect.” He continued, “Building an inclusive community—not just for Latinx people, but for all—through the power of cinema lies at the core of Milwaukee Film’s mission, and as the Cine Sin Fronteras programmer, it’s a mission I’m honored to be a part of.”

In the Summers – Friday, October 4th at 7 pm, and will continue to screen at the Oriental Theatre throughout the week

In the Summers is an autobiographical drama that won the Grand Jury Prize U.S. Dramatic at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The film follows two sisters on a  journey that spans the formative years of their lives, as they navigate their loving but volatile father during their yearly summer visits to his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

8th Annual Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase – Saturday, October 5th at 4 pm

The showcase began in 2016 as a celebration of films made by women filmmakers from the U.S.-Mexico border region. Since then, they have expanded to include powerful short films from around the world, whose stories challenge perceptions about women, border communities, immigrants, people of color, the LBGTQ+ community, and other underrepresented communities.

Borderland – Sunday, October 6th at 4 pm

There is a war on immigrants. A massive surveillance, militarized and carceral apparatus has been built to capture, imprison and deport millions. But in the shadow of this border industrial-complex, immigrants are building a rights movement envisioning a future rooted in human connection and the sanctity of life.

Hail to the Breadsticks! – Monday, October 14th at 7 pm

Writer producer Donick Cary (The Simpsons, Parks and Recreation, Have a Good Trip, etc.) has been a huge fan of the Washington D.C. pro football team since before he could walk. Passed down from his dad, he was excited to pass the tradition onto his kids. Donick never questioned the team name and or Native American logo until one day, while watching a game, his 9-year-old son, Otis, asked him if it was racist. When Otis suggests they ask Native Americans how they feel, it sends the two on a cross-country journey full of unexpected surprises. Hail to the Breadsticks! follows multiple perspectives throughout its story: the innocent questioning of a 9-year-old non-Native boy, the open-minded inquiries of a super fan of the team, and most importantly, a broad swath of Native America.
