MADISON — Gov. Evers announced today his appointment of Lukas Steiner to the Crawford County Circuit Court. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Judge Lynn M. Rider’s retirement. He will complete a term ending July 31, 2025.

“With more than a decade of experience practicing law and several years of service in Crawford County as the district attorney, Lukas Steiner has the experience necessary to hit the ground running on day one and will be a great judge for the people of Crawford County,” said Gov. Evers.

Steiner has served as the Crawford County District Attorney since January 2020. As the only prosecutor in office, he has a breadth of experience prosecuting cases ranging from traffic violations to violent crimes. Prior to serving as district attorney, he primarily practiced criminal defense and family law and was an attorney at Kopp McKichan from 2011 to 2016 and McNamara, Reinicke, Vogelsberg & Helmke LLP from 2016 to 2020.

“Luke Steiner is an outstanding choice for Crawford County Circuit Court Judge,” said retiring Crawford County Circuit Court Judge Rider. “I have observed his work for approximately 14 years both in private practice and as the District Attorney for Crawford County. He is well liked by colleagues and court staff. He has shown himself to be hard-working and well-versed in the law, but just as importantly, he displays the temperament, integrity, and fairness that will serve the people of Crawford County well.”

Steiner grew up in Southwestern Wisconsin, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Marquette University Law School, and lives in Prairie du Chien.

“I am humbled and deeply honored to accept Governor Evers’ appointment as the next Crawford County Circuit Court Judge,” said Steiner. “It has been a privilege to serve Crawford County as District Attorney, and I very much look forward to continuing that service from the bench. I hope to continue the traditions of fairness, equity, equality, and impartiality set forth by my predecessors, Judges Kirchman, Czajkowski, and Rider. Lastly, I sincerely thank my friends, family, and colleagues for their support and encouragement.”
