Milwaukee Bucks Launch Bucks Health And Wellness To Combat Obesity In The Milwaukee Community

The Milwaukee Bucks have launched Bucks Health and Wellness, a new holistic medical program designed to prevent and combat obesity within underserved populations of Milwaukee. The free and innovative initiative was formed by Bucks ownership, Elizabeth Sharp, M.D., and the Milwaukee Bucks Foundation.

Bucks Health and Wellness was introduced at a press conference today with Dr. Sharp; Peter Feigin, Bucks and Fiserv Forum President; David Crowley, Milwaukee County Executive; Dr. Troy Flanagan, Bucks Vice President of Performance; and Dr. Michael Totoraitis, City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner.

“Bucks Health and Wellness is reimagining how we can treat and manage obesity and bring preventative care to the Milwaukee community,” said Dr. Sharp. “More than 30 percent of adults in Wisconsin are classified as obese, and that number is even greater in Milwaukee County. We are proud to launch this innovative, personalized program to make wellness and weight management more accessible to underserved communities in Milwaukee.”

A first-of-its-kind program in the NBA, Bucks Health and Wellness combines the three pillars of health – personalized medical care, exercise and nutrition – and has been designed with expert advisors and the Bucks’ performance and sports nutrition departments.

“Bucks Health and Wellness puts community health at the front and center of their mission,” Crowley said. “This new initiative to provide low-income residents with access to leading-edge personalized weight loss plans that they otherwise could not afford helps to advance our shared goal of health equity. I’m grateful for the partnership of the Bucks as we work to create a healthy community together.”

Participants in Bucks Health and Wellness receive a comprehensive initial assessment that includes strength testing and biometric analysis, weight loss medication, blood work and laboratory analysis, along with continued virtual and in-person follow-ups at the program clinic in Schlitz Park (101 W. Pleasant St., Suite 204, Milwaukee). A healthcare team is dedicated to providing high-quality service and participants have access to a mobile app that offers a personalized meal plan and exercise program, as well as yoga and meditation videos.

“Bucks Health and Wellness furthers our commitment to making positive change in the Milwaukee community,” Feigin said. “This program marks one of the most significant private investments in public health in Milwaukee history and we’re confident that it will make a lasting impact on Milwaukee residents and the future of our city.”

Bucks Health and Wellness requires a 12-month commitment and dedication to program interventions. Attendance at the initial weigh-in and all follow-up sessions with providers are required. Eligible patients must be between the ages of 18-64, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above, be non-diabetic and meet specific income thresholds.
