Reckless Driving Claims Multiple Lives on Oklahoma Ave. Thursday Morning
Statement from Alderman Peter Burgelis June 20, 2024
Early this morning, three individuals lost their lives (and a fourth is being treated for serious injuries) while in a car that was speeding on Oklahoma Ave. and subsequently hitting multiple parked cars.
The “Oklahoma Avenue Speedway” has been a matter of concern for area residents for quite some time. Unfortunately, the Milwaukee Police Department hasn’t been able to allocate appropriate resources from District 6 to adequately patrol the area. The 11th Aldermanic District encompasses one squad zone that includes approximately 42,000 residents. That ONE SQUAD per 42,000 people is clearly less protection than residents deserve!
Can you imagine West Allis or Wauwatosa being protected by one or two police officers? Although the 11th District has the lowest crime rate of the entire city, reckless driving and public safety remain concerns just as they do throughout the entire city. The southwest side pays far too much in property taxes to have far too little police protection. We must continue to examine all possible areas of improvement to combat reckless driving and keep our communities safe. Our residents deserve as much.

It will continue to be difficult to combat reckless drivers with Mayor Johnson in city hall. Basically Milwaukee is experiencing a ” horrible person ” in public office who is a image of the neighborhood he grew up in. Zip code 53206 is the number where the unserved find comfortable to do as they please.
One of the best “traffic calming” methods that the City of Milwaukee needs to apply…and seriously…is a ticket book. Sure, it won’t stop everyone from driving crazy, but it sure is a start. No million dollar street narrowing, or redesigns of intersections. It used to be called something simple…ENFORCEMENT! Same thing with the minor stuff that used to be controlled. Expired plates. Equipment violations. Driving without a license. Unregistered, or improperly resisted autos. But the city doesn’t want to be the bad guy…and is afraid of some people saying they are picking on people. Nowadays, you can get away with extreme amounts of unpaid parking tickets, driving without a license, or multiple drunk driving offenses without the fear of going to jail.
MARTYR George Floyd showed everyone how easily one can challenge authority. Law enforcement was never going to be the same ever again. I feel sorry for addicted George only when thinking one of his own color chose to record his ” sacrifice for changing times.”
