Statement from Mayor Cavalier Johnson On the Passing of Marquette President Michael Lovell
“Marquette University has always been a great institution in Milwaukee; President Dr. Michael Lovell made Marquette a great community partner.
“It is hard to overstate Mike’s role in higher education in Milwaukee. For the past decade, he was the first lay leader of Marquette University. Prior to that, Mike was Chancellor Lovell, the leader of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
“Equally impressive was Mike’s kindness and humility. He was a gentle person who cared deeply about Milwaukee. He served our community with distinction.
“I am greatly saddened by the passing of President Lovell. My sympathy goes out to his family, to the Marquette community, and to everyone in Milwaukee whose lives were touched by this great man.”

Statement from Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson Applauding Governor Evers’ Budget
Feb 20th, 2025 by Mayor Cavalier JohnsonLooks Forward to Continuing to Engage with the Governor and the State Legislature to Deliver for Milwaukeeans
Yes a truly great person. A great loss. He supported an effort to bring Milwaukee’s caring community together. It was going to be different this time. I will leave it to others to describe the progress made and progress was made. It is so tragic that SDC and now MPS are not in position to step up to the plate. Who is speaking for and acting for the Children of Milwaukee. When will MPS STOP all suspensions and provide THERAPY in all the school where others believe the police are needed. When oh when will all those with power will acknowledge that all kids who are abused/traumatized need therapy to help heal their DEVELOPING brains. Yes the brain of a 12 year old is the brain of a child not fully developed and clearly not being capable of understanding what a normal brain is. Michael Lovell understood that.
