UWM’s First New Academic Building in 20 Years
The nearly completed, $80 million, five-floor interdisciplinary center should raise university's national research profile.
The five-story $80 million University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Center, having been under construction since October 2012, is approaching 100 percent complete. The 150,000-square-foot building is the first new academic building built on campus in almost 20 years, and is a key part of the university’s attempt to raise its national research profile. Flad Architects designed the building, which is expected to be LEED Silver certified when finished.
Located at the northwest corner of N. Maryland Ave. and E. Kenwood Blvd. on UWM’s campus, the facility will become the new home for the UWM Department of Physics. The facility will house state-of-the-art research labs, including labs for the Zilber School of Public Health, collaboration space, and office space to support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
The building is just the first phase of a interdisciplinary research complex. Two more buildings are planned for the site which will bring the total cost for the entire complex to $225 million.

Most new and reconstructed building should be able to achieve LEED Silver. They should have been seeking LEED Gold or higher. A code building is considered a D- type building if you had to give it a grade – barely passing as a building for the future.

UW-M looks to be making great progress. They acquired the old hospital which was genius, built the freshwater school which was a dud, and they now have this beautiful building.
This building will add to their profile as a research university.
Combined with increasing standards for admittance (88%), they will continue to move up the rankings.
