MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson will deliver a keynote address, “Milwaukee’s Bold Vision: 1 Million Residents,” at the Marquette University Center for Real Estate’s 12th annual Real Estate Strategies Conference, Wednesday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.

John Johnson, research fellow in Marquette Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, will follow Mayor Johnson with a keynote presentation and discussion, “Growing Milwaukee’s Population to 1 Million: Lessons Learned from Peer Cities and Ideas for How It Will Happen.”

Registration is available online and open to the public. Media interested in covering the conference should contact Kevin Conway, associate director of university communication, at kevin.m.conway@marquette.edu.

The two keynotes tie into this year’s conference theme, “We’re Building It, Will They Come?” From adaptive reuse to transit-oriented development and public-private partnerships to community engagement and cultural amenities, the conference will focus on the innovative strategies and real-world examples that are transforming Milwaukee, Chicago and beyond, and creating more vibrant and inclusive communities.

Real estate executives will also weigh in during a panel, “We’re Building It, Will They Come? A Real Estate Perspective.” Panelists include Ivan Gamboa, senior vice president at Tri City National Bank; Linda Gorens-Levey, partner at General Capital Group; S.R. Mills, CEO at Bear Development; and Kevin Newell, CEO of Royal Capital Group.

Through innovative teaching, research and outreach, the Center for Real Estate aims to deepen commercial real estate knowledge at Marquette, in Milwaukee, across the Midwest and throughout the nation. Marquette’s is the only commercial real estate program offered at a Catholic and Jesuit university, uniquely grounding everything the center does in a solid foundation of business principles, ethics, and an environment that engages students, professionals and academics alike.

I appreciate the mayor’s efforts to create more homeowners vs renters. Too many rental property owners are trying to get rich at the poor’s expense.

Helping individuals buy/rent to own is where we should be going. Involving Habitat for Humanities, Milwaukee Public Schools, and local colleges (student volunteers) to help homeowners upgrade their homes. Change the tax codes to encourage the transition from rental to individual owners.

Again, I appreciate the mayor’s efforts to help people move into good homes that they own.
