Common Council Concludes 2023 City Budget Process

Joint statement from Common Council President José G. Pérez and Finance and Personnel Chair Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic

By - Nov 22nd, 2022 10:07 am

We are content that this deliberative budget process has concluded with our final action today. While we may have disagreed slightly with the Mayor on the funding priorities for our city, we remain in complete agreement on our dire financial outlook moving forward. The Council was creative in locating funding for important services like libraries and fire, but we know our time is running out. We stand united alongside our Mayor in working to secure the shared revenue we deserve and the local revenue generating options we need to thrive and grow as the largest city in our state.

The work on the 2024 budget begins now.

We must send an unequivocal warning message to our residents and the business community that there will be massive changes to city services next year if the state is not responsive to our long-standing requests. Members of the Council will be examining our city services, considering reductions, closures, and consolidation measures to continue to maintain our quality of life. While we prefer to not enact such measures, we will move forward in the most open, transparent, and community-centered manner possible for Milwaukee’s future.
