Supervisors Martinez and Clancy Applaud Decision to Study Providing Inclusive Restrooms in Milwaukee County Facilities
MILWAUKEE – On Thursday, September 22, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution requesting the study of cost and implementation of providing inclusive restrooms with inclusive restroom signage in Milwaukee County facilities. Supervisors Martinez and Clancy made the following statements.
“I am elated that Milwaukee County took a step towards equity today,” said Supervisor Martinez. “Oftentimes the needs of marginalized groups are ignored or swept under the rug. Today we hold up residents who are transgender, non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming. We stand with families who have children of different genders, and persons who use adaptive equipment. I am proud that we passed this resolution today. I look forward to receiving this study and using it as a tool to create inclusive bathrooms for everyone in Milwaukee County.”
“As a father of an amazing non-binary child, as a father to an exceptional trans man, and as a parent who often has to keep track of kids of different genders in different bathrooms, I am proud and grateful that Milwaukee County has taken this important step towards inclusivity and accessibility.” said Supervisor Clancy.
According to the 2015 U.S Transgender Survey, 59% of respondents said they have avoided bathrooms because they feared confrontations in public restrooms, at work, school or other places.
In 2019, the City of Milwaukee passed a resolution establishing a gender-inclusive restroom policy for buildings owned and operated by the City.
