Amnesty during August on pet licensing late filing fees
The late filing fees of $12 for an unspayed or unneutered cat or dog, and $6 for a spayed or neutered cat or dog are being waived for City of Milwaukee pet owners through August 31.
The late filing fees of $12 for an unspayed or unneutered cat or dog, and $6 for a spayed or neutered cat or dog are being waived for City of Milwaukee pet owners through August 31. The amnesty period (August 1 to August 31, 2014) was approved by the full Common Council on July 22, 2014.
Animal licensing is required for all dogs and cats in the City of Milwaukee when they turn five months old. In fact, all 19 Milwaukee County municipalities require the owners of cats and dogs to license their pets every year. These licenses are good from January 1 through December 31 and must be renewed annually.
The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) has an annual grace period for renewals which allows residents until March 31 to renew a license without penalty. Starting April 1 each year, a late fee will apply to license renewals.
If you live in the City of Milwaukee and your animal ends up at the MADACC shelter, you will pay:
- Ordinance Fee — $60
- Impound Fee — $30 (for an unlicensed animal, $20 for licensed animal)
- Boarding Fee — $15 (and each day that goes up $15)
- License Fee — $12 ($24 for intact animal – late fees even higher!)
- Rabies Vaccine Fee — $25
Total — $142 (and could go higher depending on above variables)

The current licensing fees are:
Before March 31
- Altered Dog or Cat — $12
- Intact Dog or Cat — $24
April 1 through end of year
- Altered Dog or Cat — $18
- Intact Dog or Cat — $36
Puppies and kittens must be licensed at five months old. Beginning July 1 each
year puppies and kittens require the following fees:
- Altered Puppy or Kitten — $6
- Intact Puppy or Kitten — $12
Licensing is easy to do. Animal owners can come in person to MADACC at 3839 W. Burnham St. in West Milwaukee to purchase a license, or they can purchase a license online by going to MADACC’s website at http://www.madacc.org/online_license.htm.
