Milwaukee Home Down Payment Assistance Program now available

By - Jun 17th, 2021 09:22 am

City of Milwaukee residents looking to purchase homes within the city are now able to apply for forgivable grants through the Milwaukee Home Down Payment Assistance Program. The program was an initiative included in the 2021 budget and was championed by Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for a home purchase in the City of Milwaukee, and grants of up to $7,000 are available if purchasing a home within the City’s Community Development Block Grant Area boundary.

“I’m incredibly happy this down payment assistance program has come to fruition,” said Alderman Stamper. “We know that a major barrier to buying a home for many residents, particularly first-time buyers, is lack of funding for a down payment.  I’d urge all eligible residents to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity.”

Eligible buyers must be City of Milwaukee residents, not exceed maximum household income limits based on family size, live in the purchased home for a minimum of five years, and complete eight hours of counseling from a HUD approved homebuyer counseling agency. Additional requirements do apply. The program is administered by the City’s home buying counseling agency partners ACTS Housing, Housing Resources Inc. and United Community Center. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact one of the partner agencies directly. More info can be found by visiting www.milwaukee.gov/mhdpa.
