Council Adopts Files Creating a Rental Property Inspection Program
During today’s meeting of the Common Council (Tuesday, September 22), the Council adopted two files to establish a new rental property inspection program. Both files, sponsored by Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, aim to allow increased inspection of rental property in certain districts to ensure the provision of habitable housing in those areas.
The first file, #260363, creates a rental property inspection program that allows the City to designate certain districts wherein rental properties may be initially and periodically inspected for habitability violations. Upon finding evidence that an area of the city contains blight, high rates of building code complaints or violations, deteriorating property values, or increases in single-family home conversions to rental units, the Common Council may designate the area as a rental property inspection program district.
The second file, #260362, designates an area within the 15th Aldermanic District (the Uptown neighborhood) as Rental Property Inspection District #1.
“Our goal with this pilot program is to follow the data, concentrate resources where they are needed, inspect eligible properties, and establish accountability for every landlord,” said Alderman Stamper. “We aren’t working toward maximizing enforcement and penalties, we’re working toward safer homes, less blight, and cleaner, more stable neighborhoods. I want to thank my colleagues for their support of this effort.”
