Sunstone Studios Opening in East Town

A rentable performance space for artists is opening Downtown this summer.

Sunstone Studios is moving into the space at 127 E. Wells St., owned by Edgewater Real Estate, formerly occupied by Off the Wall Theatre, which closed during the past year. The business will be opening this summer, according to its website.

Sunstone Studios is being opened by Amber J. Regan, according to a license application pending before the Milwaukee Common Council. It will offer prop, costume, theater, and studio rental to community members, with a focus on outreach to marginalized communities. A membership is also offered with the goal of making theater affordable for small producers.

“We stand as a diverse team of Milwaukeeans who love our city so much that we will use our space, our privileges, and our creative voices to challenge (Milwaukee) to do better, and become better for all people,” the company wrote on its website.

Participants will be selected using “intentional racial diversity,” with 40% Black and brown identified participants, 40% white identified and 20% neither Black, brown, or white identified.

“We believe a diverse community of artists sharing resources in a physical space builds a vibrant culture focused on pushing the limits of art,” the company wrote.

Sunstone Studios offers podcast and video recording with video editing, graphics, additional cameras and promotional photography as optional add-ons. The studios will be open 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Sunday.

Sunstone Studios is planning on having dancing, comedy acts, magic shows, poetry readings, theatrical performances and drag shows, according to the license application.

“We stand in the gap as fellow artists and creatives to offer rental space and membership with access to shared services, value-added features, and programming with a significant focus on outreach to marginalized communities,” the company wrote.

Regan did not respond to a request for more information by the time of publication.
