Committee to hear file related to moratorium on mechanical demolitions

The Joint Committee on Redevelopment of Abandoned and Foreclosed Homes at its next meeting on Monday, May 10 at 10 a.m. will hear a communication file regarding a resolution directing the Department of Neighborhood Services and Department of Public Works to establish a moratorium on mechanical demolition of 1-4 family residential structures until the city plan to deploy American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for housing programs is developed. Alderman Robert J. Bauman, chairman of the committee, has introduced the communication file and corresponding resolution directing the moratorium be put into place.

“The Council and the administration have both indicated that housing investment should be a priority in discussions about where to allocate American Rescue Plan Act dollars. Given it is too early to tell yet what that investment will look like, I think it only makes sense to pause mechanical demolitions of properties that could otherwise be rehabilitated or deconstructed should resources be available,” said Alderman Bauman.

In addition to the communication file being heard on Monday, the full resolution establishing the moratorium will be discussed at an upcoming Common Council committee meeting.

Monday’s committee meeting will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
