Brewers Sign Catcher Luke Maile
Free Agent Agrees To One-Year Contract
MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have signed free-agent catcher Luke Maile (MAY-lee) to a one-year contract. The announcement was made by President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.
Maile, 29, signed as a free agent with the Pirates last Dec. 16, but missed the entire 2020 season with a fractured right index finger. He suffered the injury after being hit by a Geoff Hartlieb pitch during a Summer Camp intrasquad game on July 16 at PNC Park. He underwent surgery the following day, performed by Dr. Ed Birdsong.
Selected by Tampa Bay in the eighth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Kentucky, Maile has appeared in 216 games in the Major Leagues with the Rays (2015-16) and Blue Jays (2017-19), batting .198 with 10 HR and 60 RBI. He has made 178 career starts, all but one coming behind the plate.
