3,626 New COVID-19 Cases, Another Active Hospitalization Record High
Lowest death total in a week. Alternate Care Facility has two patients.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 3,626 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday afternoon. The new cases come from 14,022 processed tests.
Data from a planned outage of the state’s electronic records system last weekend still impacts the seven- and 14-day positive case rates, but one-day totals for much of the past week have consistently exceeded the state’s record averages seen just before the outage. Sunday’s one-day positive case rate, the measure of tests confirming a new case of the disease, was 25.86%.
Officials have looked for the positive case rate to trend downward to indicate a slowing spread of disease and sufficient testing. Multiple public health benchmarks call for the positive case figure to be sustained under five percent.
DHS reported 95 people were newly hospitalized in the past 24 hours, the lowest total in a week. A total of 10,332 Wisconsin residents have required hospitalization with a confirmed case of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
The number of people actively hospitalized climbed to a record 1,295 according to the Wisconsin Hospital Association. That total is up 58 from yesterday and 205 from a week ago. Thirty days ago it stood at 574.
The Alternate Care Facility at Wisconsin State Fair Park, a relief valve for overburdened hospitals, has two occupants, down from a record high of three yesterday.
For the first time in two weeks the 30-day average death toll fell, by 0.03, to 16.80. The drop comes as DHS reported eight deaths Sunday, bringing the outbreak total to 1,778. Milwaukee County, according to DHS data, accounts for 569 deaths.
Over the past month Milwaukee County has gone from having the worst per-capita outbreak to the 14th worst in the state, even as its case and hospitalization load has surged to record levels.
Menominee County has recorded 6,458.2 cases per 100,000 residents (no change). Shawano County has recorded 5,642.3 cases per 100,000 residents. Brown, Oconto, Calumet, Kewaunee, Winnebago, Forest, Outagamie, Florence, Waupaca, Langlade and Dodge counties are the remaining counties leading Milwaukee.
According to DHS data, 4,125 out of every 100,000 Milwaukee County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began (up from 4,034.8).
The statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents rose to 3,427.9 (up from 3,365.1). Wisconsin has recorded a per-capita rate of 760.9 cases per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks according to the DHS activity level report released Wednesday.
