Avoidable and senseless crash takes the life of beloved community leader, spouse

Joint statement from Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa, Alderman Scott Spiker and Alderman José G. Pérez October 20, 2020

We are saddened beyond words as another senseless reckless driving incident in our city has claimed lives. Over the weekend, this crash took away a friend and leader on Milwaukee’s near south side.

Teresita “La Bonita” and Luis Contreras were killed when their car was hit by a reckless driver on Saturday evening near S. 27th and W. Edgerton in Alderman Spiker’s district. A woman was taken into custody in connection with the crash.

Teresita was a beloved member of Milwaukee’s south side community and a leader in our Latino and immigrant communities. Alderman Pérez and I knew her personally and our hearts are broken. She was truly a bright light who brought so much to Milwaukee through her work with the non-profit organization, Core El Centro, and the Mujeres con Poder program.

Teresita and her husband were heads of a loving family that includes three beautiful daughters. We offer our prayers and our sincere condolences to their daughters and to all of the loved ones affected by this tragedy.

Sadly, Teresita and Luis Contreras were killed in a senseless and preventable crash caused by a reckless driver. Milwaukee has seen far too many cases of reckless driving where innocent motorists and pedestrians have been killed or maimed.

If you know someone who drives in a reckless manner, do whatever you can to make them stop, and if you witness reckless driving, please report it to police.

The actions you take may help prevent the next fatal reckless driving crash in Milwaukee.
