League of Women Voters of Wisconsin Encourages Participation in Special Session
[MADISON, Wis.] – Yesterday, and today, the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) sent letters to members of the Wisconsin State Legislature, encouraging representatives to participate in the Governor’s special session on police accountability and transparency.
“We are urging the legislature to rise to this occasion and give this special session the urgent and productive effort this moment demands and that the people of Wisconsin deserve,” said Louise Petering, president of the LWVWI. “LWVWI shares Gov. Evers’ sense of urgency about the necessity for developing practices, procedures and potential funding reallocation to more effectively protect people and promote public safety.”
Gov. Evers called the special session because he believes “we must begin the long but important path toward ensuring our state and our country start to live up to our promises of equity and justice.” Recent deaths and harms of citizens in Wisconsin and throughout the country represent the necessity for legislators to focus on proposals to prevent such violence from happening again.
LWVWI’s law enforcement positions support locally developed policy by cooperative efforts of citizens and law enforcement agencies using state guidelines, but reflecting local needs.
The letter was sent to Senate Majority Leader Fitzgerald and Assembly Majority Leader Vos on Sunday, and to the rest of the legislature Monday morning.
