Bronzeville Week final stretch includes Sleepover for Education, drive-in movie

2020 Bronzeville Week is in its final stretch with two remaining days of festive events highlighting wellness, commerce and entertainment. All events throughout the week can be viewed on the Bronzeville Week Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BronzevilleWeek. Events will also be available for playback on the Bronzeville website at milwaukee.gov/bronzeville. Bronzeville Week is hosted by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, and sponsors include Alderwoman Coggs, the City of Milwaukee and Historic King Drive Business Improvement District 8.

Friday, August 7 begins with a virtual #ShopBronzeville: Business Check-in starting at noon. The event will feature various Bronzeville businesses and is hosted by Deshea Agee – Executive Director, Historic King Drive BID 8. At 2 p.m. residents can tune in for Be Counted: History of the Census, a discussion on why the Census is so important curated by LaShawndra Vernon. The afternoon wraps up with Looks by Luna, a virtual makeup tutorial featuring makeup artist Lola Vernon.

Friday evening includes the Bronzeville Sleepover for Education running from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Donations of school supplies are being accepted throughout the week, and all supplies will be distributed to Milwaukee Public Schools students in need. Donation drop-off locations include Pete’s Fruit Market located at 2323 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. and Milwaukee Police Department District 5 station located at 2920 Vel R. Phillips Ave. This year donation requests include masks, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, residents can watch Bronzeville: Move the Crowd Quarantine Edition. This event will feature music from The Dope Music Crew.

The final day of Bronzeville Week – Saturday, August 8th – begins at 10 a.m. with the Bronzeville Ride led by Red, Bike and Green Milwaukee. The event will kick-off at UBUNTU Research & Evaluation located at 1950 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The Well Mommy & Baby Care Package Drive-up sponsored by the African American Breastfeeding Network, Inc. runs from 1 – 5 p.m. on Saturday. Package pick-up will take place at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church at 2207 N. 2nd Street. You must be pre-registered for a pick-up time. Please visit http://aabnetwork.org/register to register.

Bronzeville Week concludes with a drive-in movie night double feature. The drive-in will take place at 2555 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Space is limited and those interested must register in advance for a ticket. The first feature will be The Wiz and will start at 2:30 p.m. Those interesting in attending should reserve their ticket at http://www.plt882020thewiz.eventbrite.com. The second feature will be Barbershop beginning at 7 p.m. Prior to the start of Barbershop there will be a community conversation led by Black Lens featuring State Representative Kalan Haywood, Nicole Robbins – Executive Director, Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation, Neil Kelly – Master Barber/Minister, Gee’s Clippers and Beauty Salon and Tokara Bijou Henson – Owner of Bijou Nails & Company. Those wanting to attend the screening of Barbershop can reserve their ticket at http://www.plt882020barbershop.eventbrite.com.
