Milwaukee County Board Approves Next Steps for Solar Farm at Mitchell Airport
The Milwaukee County Board has passed a resolution to study the feasibility of a new solar project at Mitchell International Airport.
The Milwaukee County Board has passed a resolution to study the feasibility of a new solar project at Mitchell International Airport. The vote to approve was 16 to 2.
“The Board’s positive endorsement of my green power-green jobs legislation is an important step towards increasing the use of renewable energy in Milwaukee County,” said County Board Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, sponsor of the resolution. “We have an opportunity to stimulate the local economy by creating green jobs, while producing clean energy for the future.
“With the cost of solar panels becoming more economically feasible, now is the time to think big in Milwaukee County. Other airports around the country have installed similar solar farms and have seen great energy savings.”
Dimitrijevic said that solar energy helps protect Wisconsin’s natural resources and advances the energy efficiency and renewable energy provisions of Milwaukee County’s ‘Greenprint’ initiative while supporting Wisconsin’s goal of using 10 percent renewable energy by 2015.
The ‘Greenprint’ initiative was introduced by Dimitrijevic and passed in 2007. It was expanded in 2009 to include a Sustainability Director to oversee the initiative. Milwaukee County has saved taxpayer money by reducing energy consumption and improving our county-wide infrastructure.
